What is a watershed?
A watershed is a geographic area where water flows to a common point such as a river, lake or the ocean. The Parker River watershed is the area of land that drains to the Parker River and eventually flows to Plum Island Sound. Likewise, the Ipswich River watershed is the area of land that drains to the Ipswich River and eventually flows to Plum Island Sound.
Watersheds are natural boundaries without regard for political boundaries or communities. Therefore, water and rivers connect communities within a watershed. What happens in one town affects others in the watershed. Pollution in one area of a watershed will likely affect others downstream. Also, if one community takes too much water from a river or the groundwater it may affect communities downstream and may also affect environmental conditions in the river. Consequently, fish and other aquatic life will be affected by these actions.

The following schematic shows the path of rain water to the ocean from two locations, one in the Parker Watershed, the other in the Ipswich Watershed.
